Don't get your hopes up

Nov 20 2007 4:55pm

So, it looks very possible that the U.S. Supreme Court will examine the issue of the constitutionality of personal gun ownership for really the first time in 80 years. (link)
But I have lost faith in the idea that the Court will actually ever decide one of these divisive issues decisively one way or the other. The modern courts tend to instead "punt" on the big issues with narrow rulings that decide the specifics of the individual case before them rather than making landmark decisions that settle the larger, long-term, divisive constitutional questions that have plagued our society for generations. Hence, the constitutional uncertainties continue to vex us, forever unresolved, like an open societal wound that divides us all from our countrymen.
As Kurt Vonnegut might say: "So it goes".

The validity of the "street performer" business model

Nov 06 2007 2:31pm

So, will the "New Media" revenue model that depends on voluntary donations fly? Judging by the new info on the amounts people voluntarily paid for the latest Radiohead music, I'd say that it sure looks possible.
Radiohead Story
We here at KBANDEN MEDIA are watching trends and experiments like this very carefully. Anytime anyone tries to take a chance with something like allowing people to pay whatever they want for their content, the rest of us who already do so watch the results carefully.
The biggest challenge seems to be to keep the levels of donations from trailing off over time. Were Radiohead's numbers a reflection of what they could expect normally...or were they because of the novelty of the idea?
I CAN say that we would be thrilled if 35% of the show's listeners (the percentage the story said that were willing to donate voluntarily for Radiohead's music) gave in to our buck-a-show suggestions. But if even 10% did we would do fine. We also found what the Radiohead survey did: the people who DO give, usually give more than the minimum.
So, can the "New Media" survive and profit? Survey says......maybe.

Faux Hopes

Oct 25 2007 1:36pm

So, a faux presidential candidate is apparently doing better than several real ones. link
Would these people REALLY vote for Stephen Colbert at the polls? If so, might it affect the outcome? Right now he is polling much better than Ralph Nader did when he (supposedly) threw the 2000 election into flux. And, it is funny (no pun intended) to see how seriously it is starting to upset the two Hertz and Avis parties.
While I can't help but laugh at the strangeness of the whole situation, there's a part of me that feels bad that it is all fake. What I wouldn't give to have a real candidate that gave me hope and stood a realistic chance of winning...

Your chance to make a difference

Oct 11 2007 1:56pm

Many people want to make a difference in life. There are many ways to do this. You can work to save the environment, you can fight to clean up Washington D.C., you can protest the use of your tax dollars for causes you disagree with.
We suggest you forget about doing any of these things and instead help us to redesign our website. Here's a link to the whole story: The website redesign story
Basically, here's how we figure it: There are a great many people working on the environmental problems, the corruption in D.C and the tax issues. But NOBODY is helping us. Where are you likely to make the most difference?
Don't kid yourself. Those other causes can take care themselves. WE, on the other hand, are helpless.
