And the "Fiscal Conservatives" find a new way to perform social engineering on a vast scale.
Bravo.

There are fiscal conservatives in this thread?

Take the government out of student lending, and let the lenders decide for themselves how much risk to take and based on what criteria. If lenders aren't forthcoming, let the universities with their multi-billion endowment funds put their money where their mouth is with regards to how valuable an education at their institution is and lend the students tuition money.

We need to treat colleges and universities for what they are, BIG Business. But these Big business' hiding behind all kinds of feel good legislation will not let the system get changed, they will lobby to keep the status quo in which every time the government raises the amount of money it gives out, tuition costs raise right along with it. Resulting in higher debt to the student.

Yep . . . typical libertarian thinking.
EVERYTHING should be treated as a business.
Derp derp derp . . . business is the only model my chimp brain can conceive, so all problems must be nails for my ideological hammer.

When they act like big business they need to be treated like big business.

Could be that some people can't think of anything that doesn't look like big business. A colony of ants looks like big business to them. Stalks of corn look like big business to them. A dog peeing on a fire hydrant looks like big business . . . because their chimp brains can only see the world through the big business lens.

Hey, you know what REALLY looks like big business?
CHURCHES.

But y'all don't want to talk about that do you?

Atheists make up a disproportionate amount of libertarians--the High Priestess of libertarianism herself, Ayn Rand, made Dawkins look like the Pope.

It wouldn't bother me a great deal to see Churches taxed. When I see operations like Jim and Tammy Fae Baker, they are big business. The difference between Universities and Churches is that most churches don't demand a tuition to enter the doors, nor for every hour you spend there. Churches are generally pretty good about taking care of their own and giving to charity. Universities are good at taking care of themselves and giving to their own endowments.

Churches and Universities also have a lot in common. Their structures are made of solid stone, rare wood, expensive glass and cost exorbitant sums of money to create a temple for worship. Each asks for money for the life of a member, whether tithing or alumni donations. Both have mascots, be they ancient prophets, animals or tenured profs. Each has its own philosophy that is taught to their members, both claiming to seek enlightenment.
Many Universities and colleges however are state and federally funded, we have Student Loan programs to ensure students can attend the templer(university) of their choice. Because government is propping up the universities industry, and making a ton of money doing, they should be treated like business by the government.
Do you know that wealthy fans that buy sky boxes to watch their alma maters play sports get a tax deduction to buy that sky box? That’s how corrupt the university system has become. The sky box and the millionaire in it do nothing to advance education, yet they get the perk. This is an example of how Corporate U has turned its back on middle an low income students and families and have become whores for big money.
Nearly 75% of endowment Pell Grants go to High Income earning families.(see link) Why should these universities be tax exempt to pay for college for those that can afford it, while low income students are forced to go in debt with student loans?
How big is Harvards Endowment as of 2006? $ 29,545,700,000, which means Harvard has 20% more money in the bank than McDonalds Corporation does in business every year.

You forgot another major difference . . . Universities produce arts, research, and advancements that benefit our entire society while Churches produce only some obscure sense of comfort for their tiny 'flock' and the occasional soup kitchen.

I agree, Universities do produce some advancements. But should the cost of those advancements come from the middle and lower class while they give money from their endowments to High Income earners who could pay for college anyway. I would also argue that the pharmecitical industry makes great advances that help all of society, but we deal with them as a business.

Yet without proper schooling there would be no pharmacists for you to do business with. As a society, we benefit from having educated and skilled people Investing in your own society used to be a point of pride . . . somehow in the latter half of the 20th Century it became much more fashionable to be an ignorant greed-meister, and to place greater emphasis on presenting oneself as a victim of society and professional money grubber than it is to invest in society.

It's like becoming a selfish, myopic, short-sighted redneck was suddenly the goal of your average white, male, American citizen. Whomever can squirrel away the most cash for themselves, by hook or by crook, is obviously the winner of all America.

Screw that foolishness. An educated society is where it's at. Someone doesn't want to pay for anyone else being educated? Then they should go flip burgers and shut up . . . that way they'll never earn enough to contribute a damn thing back to the society that spawned their ungrateful asses.

I'm not arguing against education, anymore than you are arguing against life saving drugs. They are both good, and we need them. I am making a case against what I see as corruption of the basic charter of the American university system, especially state funded schools. Which is to help educate the lower income and middle income students. I don't think they are doing that anymore. I fear that as the corruption continues low to mid income students just won't take the gamble and the large student loans to get higher education; the result will be greater stratification of our society.

There are ways to reform and improve the current University system that don't involve:
"Let's run it like a business, because lif is all ready too complex for me to think of any other possibilities."

We're Americans.
Not Ferengi.

What if colleges offered their educations for free but required X%/semester of their student's future earnings? (X probably in the 2 range.) This would encourage training more high-earners like engineers while spreading around the risk of training Leo DiCaprio. It would open the educational system to the poor who can't afford up-front costs and eliminate the problem of student debt. The schools themselves would incur the debt, but the risk would be diversified among all their students.
