TEACHER FIRED FOR PREGNANCY
Christian School Fires Teacher Who is Pregnant Out of Wedlock.
By KTRH STAFF

A volleyball coach and science teacher at Heritage Christian Academy has been fired for getting pregnant out of wedlock.

29-year old Cathy Samford was named "Coach of the year" at the school she has been working at for three years. Samford is currently pregnant and she was let go at the school because she is unmarried.

Colin Walsh, her attorney, says this is a blatant case of discrimination but Heritage Christian says that is not the case. HCA is a private, religious campus, and according to the school's headmaster, Dr. Ron Taylor the school considers teachers to be ministers, since they're allowed to share their beliefs in the classroom.

HCA was contacted by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission regarding the firing. Samford and Walsh said they're now considering legal action.

'Ok' for firing a woman for getting pregnant out of wedlock, or not 'ok'?
Can they fire the obese staff members for the sin of 'gluttony'?

Thoughts?

They do have that right under the first amendment, but what they did is entirely inconsistent with Christianity. There might be more to this though.

Love they neighbor?

Love the sinner not the sin?

All that jazz about pride being the deadliest sin?

Just because people call themselves Christian does not mean they will be accepted. The parable of the wedding feast explains that quite well. Christians should not be overly judgmental like that. We are supposed to accept the fallen nature of man, and strive to improve upon it. Not pretend like it never happened. Of course people make mistakes. This school could have turned this into a lesson on our fallen nature and the difficult price of sin. But they also ought to have used it as an example of charity, community, and acceptance.

I am not sure what people like DB actually want out of this. What exactly do they want to happen? Regardless of how Christian or distorted this religious institution may be, that institution still retains the right to practice their faith. Should we ignore the first amendment in this case as well?

People like this remind me of that statement made by Justice Scalia about a Constitution being worthless without the government structure which is able to maintain it. The Soviets had a fantastic bill of rights. But those rights were nothing more than parchment guarantees. That's exactly where a lot of you people seem to want our nation to go.

It might be inconsistent with your interpretation, but might be spot on with their interpretation. Also they are probably thinking of the impact on their students "Do as I say, but not as I do".

I am not defending this move, but I do understand why they did it. When a large chunk of your curriculum involves teaching abstinence till married, you can not reasonably expect the students to take it serious coming from a unmarried pregnant minister.

Doc, I highly doubt DB is posting this in hope that the government stops it.

I do not doubt the legality of the situation, the school has every right to fire her for violating dogma.
But, I doubt the morality of the situation, Christianity's biggest thing is forgiveness. It tells me allot about the faculty running the school that they were not even willing to consider forgiving her for making what they consider, an error. For a group (this school) that is supposed to be upholding the spirit of "judge not" and forgiveness, they sure did drop the ball.

I understand why they did it, I simply think it is entirely inconsistent with Christ. If she planned on going to work every day and preach the radical secularism from which the parents wanted their children protected, then that's an entirely different issue.

The problem is that they violated some core principles of Christianity. Whatsoever you do unto the least of these you do unto me.. Ye without sin cast the first stone..

Instead they fired this woman, deprived her of her income, and possibly her health care if she gets it through them. That's exactly the kind of thing Christ commands us not to do. It's not so much that you must do charity to get into heaven, but rather your not doing these things that can cost you your redemption. People get tested all the time. Look for it and you will know it when it happens.

While, I think they are fair game for criticism on moral and theological grounds, there is not much else anybody can do. That is their first amendment right, and the government has not constitutional authority to get involved in church doctrines.

Yeah, that was my take on it also.

My biggest beef with Christianity is usually members like the ones running the school. They teach and preach the word, but seem to have not listened to what the word is trying to teach them. It is one of the main reasons I left the faith, I got so tired of being taught to forgive and "Love thy enemy", but watching the clergy and other members spew hate at anyone that was not "on board" with them. I get the feeling sometimes that many Christians have stopped worshiping Christ and switched to worshiping the Bible instead.

I think churches/religions are getting a little nervous. It's like everything else; time to get to the extreme point. (I mean Pizza Hut just announced they are stuffing their crusts with hot dogs, FFS.)

Everything is getting more extreme. Shit, when I was a kid this chastity thing/no contraception thing wasn't pounded into our heads like this. I got my birth control from 18-21 at the Catholic Hospital, FFS.

This extreme shit is newer. Their numbers are dwindling so they are trying harder to appeal to the extreme. Seems illogical to take that route.... seems more welcoming/understanding would be the path to new members, but whatevs.

Of course the extreme will have to break the important rules in order to pound home the importance of the bullshit.

Animals have been having sex without wedlock since the first time animals had sex. People are just animals, and we too, have been having out of wedlock, teenage sex, since we had our first pair of teenagers.

But, we the church, can fix that by firing an unwed pregnant teacher and showing the kiddies how much their lives will suck if they make a mistake.

Religious schools expel students regularly for breaking conduct codes.

I wonder if this teacher tried the "virgin birth" defense. The legal/doctrinal precedent exists.

She could call his name Emmanuel, just like the virgin Mary named HER first son in accordance with prophecy.

O so we are going start calling ol' Jesus by his actual name now? I'm on board but it might be a touch confusing for the layman to follow.
